I originally got certified in Maui 2 years ago on my honeymoon. I did the classroom and pool stuff at home (Sacramento area) and did not pass the open water part of it due too, in my opinion, a not so good instructor and about 5 ft visibility in the water. I kept getting water in my regulator and water kept seeping into my mask. I was not comfortable at all and couldn't settle my breathing down so I just stopped the test and went home. My buddy said that the instructor should have spent extra time with me beings that the other three people in our group had some sort of previous experience, my buddy getting re-certified and one other an abalone diver.

Honestly I was just going to forget it and not bother, I felt like a failure and didn't want to humiliate myself again. My wife talked me into bringing my paperwork with me to Maui just in case I might want to finish what I started. Mind you it had been 7 months since I had tried the first time. When I got there the place we stayed at had Scuba cert classes, so I was thinking maybe I might after all. I took the number of an intructor before we left home and I called him the next day after we got there. He met me at the hotel and we drove down to the beach. The water was nice and clear 75+ft visibility. We went through my skills test and came back out. He said I did fine but he wanted to do them again. Did the skills again and then went out on a 25-30 minute dive.

Needless to say I am a certified diver now and I have my wife to thank. Only problem is, is that was 2 years ago and I haven't dove since and need to do a refresher course. I talked to my local shop and can take it for about $50. Me and my wife were married in Monterey and love it there. I would love to live there if I could but I need to win the lottery first. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give you guy's something to read. Anyway I will be on here from time to time asking questions that might seem lame but I want to learn as much as I can about the area and what to expect when I dive. Thanks, Doug

We started at McAbee Beach. There was a 9' swell at 13 seconds and the direction was to the south so they were rolling right into the cove. It a diver got off center in the cove they'd have a real problem. The cove itself looked like a washing machine. So we nixed that location and decided to look at Lovers East.

We found about the same conditions at Lovers that were at McAbee. Our next stop was Breakwater. Breakwater had some large swells but they were smaller than the week before and with the 13 sec. intervals it was a safe dive. We could see that dive boats anchored out by the aquairum so they werent going far from home with their charters.

Our first dive was the west end of the beach. Vis was about 5-8 feet. After a lunch break the ocean had laid down a lot. We talked to divers who said the vis at the wall was around 10'. Our second dive was on the breakwater wall. It was a beautiful dive with a pretty good 10' vis. We saw a large Lingcod and lots of nutibrachi. A shrimp was even spotted on the rocks.

On shore we had a light breeze and sun all day.

We dove breakwater both sat. and sun. Sat. had the largest swell predicted but with the 14sec interval it was very diveable. The vis about 6-8' and better at the west end where there werent so many divers kicking it up.

We found a great rate at a local motel of $54. They are hurting with the lack of tourism so good rates can be found right now. After our day of diving we had fantastic pizza at Giovannis and then a good nights sleep.

We were back at breakwater by 7:30am on sunday. We did our first dive at the east end and noticed that the swells were smaller and the vis was clearer than sat. The vis was around 10'

After lunch we made our second dive on the west end and headed out to the Metridium fields. While swimming down the pipe we located a nice size octopus trying to blend in to the enviroment of the pipe. There were many tube worms out eating as we headed deeper. We made it to the metridiums and as always it was a breath taking view.

Water temp was 55 and air temp was 60. The area was not overly crowded as the predicted rain (which didnt come) and the prediction of large swells seemed to keep many home.

The weather was windy which gave the ocean a good size chop. The swells in the Sea of Cortez are wind driven. The air was cooler and at times done right cold. The water ranged from 77 to 83 degrees.
From MBA mass email...

Farewell to the White Shark

The young white shark was tagged and released into the Monterey Bay early this morning after spending two-plus months in our Outer Bay exhibit.

While she was healthy, swimming easily and feeding regularly, we decided it was time to release her after observing some aggressive behavior toward other sharks in the exhibit.

During the past 69 days, she fed exclusively on mackerel, eating up to three percent of her body weight each day. She grew from an initial length of 5-foot, 3-inches and weight of 80 pounds to 5-foot, 5-inches and 100 pounds.
While here, nearly a third of a million visitors got a chance to see her and learn more about these amazing animals.
The young white shark was tagged and released into the Monterey Bay early this morning after spending two-plus months in our Outer Bay exhibit.

I was at the Breakwater today doing a snorkel swim test for the aquarium. Didn't scuba, so my report is based on what I saw while surface swimming.

Surface was flat, and visibility seemed to be about 20 feet or better. Still a few sea nettles out there. I got stung while rinsing off at the shower!

Also, swam over a larger than normal bat ray in the shallows.

We are towing our boat down mainland Mexico side to San Carlos Marina which is just north of Guaymas. We delayed our departure due to hurricane Rick that is coming in on the pacific side of Baja. With the current storm updates we will leave monday afternoon or tue. morning to begin our drive down.

The plan this trip is to do a lot more diving. We have not dove around San Carlos and hear it is beautiful. We hope to spend a week there exploring the local dive sites. We will hire a local guide to go out on our boat to dive with us. This will allow us to obtain the gps coords. of the sites for return trips.

I will have my computor with us and hope to post updates of the trip and some photos as we move from san carlos across the sea of cortez to santa rosilea and then down the coast of Baja.
